TeamSmile Got Us Smiling!

What a fantastic experience we had at this year’s TeamSmile event!  Our crew was out at Ford Field on Tuesday, October 25th in support of this great program.

TeamSmile partners oral health professionals with professional athletic organizations to provide life-changing dental care to underserved children in our communities. Children receive free oral health education, screening, treatment, and are taught that the mouth and body are linked for overall health.

TeamSmile was proud to serve 241 children with more than $124, 680 worth of free-of-charge exams, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions and root canals! They were also provided with oral hygiene instructions to know what they can do to promote their own oral health.  So may of our patients that day said they’d never had a toothbrush or had to share theirs with others in their family.  And some had never seen a dentist before.

Our team came together that day!  Michele assisted Dr. Mansour with procedures and Kim worked in the instrument area to make sure everyone had what they needed.  Rebekah took x-rays as well as taught some high-school CO-OP student volunteers the correct way to position the equipment as the students look to their possible future careers in dentistry.

And we weren’t the only ones pitching in!  Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell, fullback Michael Burton, running back Zach Zenner and several Detroit Lions cheerleaders were there to lend their support and sign autographs.  Program sponsor Colgate donated toothbrushes and toothpaste for all the kids to take home.

Programs like this one can have a powerful impact on a young child’s life and we are honored to have been able to be a part of such a great initiative.
